PvE
Usually, keep Sandstorm up at all times. Use Deflection when, and only when, you are about to take a big hit. Otherwise, just use Crush.

In some cases, you may choose Stoneskin over Sandstorm when you don't want the miss chance of Sandstorm or if you have a multi-hitter on your own team and don’t want to leave a Sandstorm blunting that.

Its Deflection allows it to avoid huge hits that would otherwise destroy a strategy. Since Deflection is a Priority Move, you use it on the round you will take the big hit, even when the Idol is slower, as it usually is. In PvP, Deflection is also sometimes replaced with Rupture for extra damage and the 25% stun chance, if your team has another pet to handle avoidance duties.

Demolish is almost never used; if you haven't applied a hit bonus first, it can be just frustrating to keep missing.

In wild battles, Sandstorm’s protection of low-level pets can be of great value, while the Idol’s Humanoid health regeneration racial combined with its huge health pool provides 69 healing every time the Idol does damage, which means it can carry pets for a long time before it needs a heal. When you know what families of wild pets you are facing, there are usually faster and more specialised pets to use, but the Idol is always reliable.

See also the Void-Scarred Anubisath, which also has the Sandstorm and Deflection combo, and with its extra ability options may be better in many cases.

PvP
In PvP, Deflection is sometimes replaced with Quake for extra damage and the 25% stun chance, if your team has another pet to handle avoidance duties. Substitute Stoneskin for Sandstorm if you have a multi-hitter on your own team and don’t want to leave a Sandstorm blunting that. While not among the top PvP pets, the Idol’s Deflection and regeneration racial make it very solid, and its Sandstorm mitigates against multi-hitters and DoTs.

Other Info
The Anubisath Idol is a versatile pet, and you should definitely have one. But this pet is highly overrated. When it comes to time efficient strategies you won't see Anubisath Idol. Oftentimes Sandstorm's RNG drives you crazy.

I (Gráinne) do not know who added that opinion is above saying that the Idol is overrated, but I believe it to be very wrong. Oddly, I think we agree on the specifics, but not the value. If I had to start all over, re-earn all achievements, re-get and re-level all pets, I would start with an Idol, or a Void-Scarred. If Blizzard made an achieve to defeat all battles in the game with one particular pet on your team every time, I would again choose an Idol or a Void-Scarred. It is indeed versatile. It is an all-rounder. You can find a use for it in almost any battle. As a new battler, it will serve you well as a substitute when you don't have the ideal pet for a particular strat.

As your roster expands and you add more pets with niche abilities, you will find you need the Idol less. While it will do the job, there will be another pet that addresses whatever specific mechanic better. You will use more pets, and rely on the Idol less. If you are a rusher, you may become impatient with the Idol's reliable-but-slow performance. But none of that detracts from the Idol's inherent value

This pet is part of the Raiding with Leashes Achievement, which upon completing will reward Mr. Bigglesworth
