Using any dragon with Mana Surge for Stings is usually faster than the Idol. Typically the fight is over after the second turn.

Seconding this. Flayer+Nexus Whelpling is a quicker strat than this one or the Idol+Starlette one and without any Sandstorm RNG (though maybe not as quick as the Xu-Fu one). I hadn't used my Flayer in ages and I'm glad I have a reason to again.

Any pet with Surge of Power will also do the job in one turn.
