Usually, keep Sandstorm up at all times. Use Deflection when, and only when, you are about to take a big hit. Otherwise, just use Crush.

In some cases, you may choose Stoneskin over Sandstorm when you don't want the miss chance of Sandstorm or if you have a multi-hitter on your own team and don’t want to leave a Sandstorm blunting that.

Its Deflection allows it to avoid huge hits that would otherwise destroy a strategy. Since Deflection is a Priority Move, you use it on the round you will take the big hit, even when the Idol is slower, as it usually is. In PvP, Deflection is also sometimes replaced with Rupture for extra damage and the 25% stun chance, if your team has another pet to handle avoidance duties.

Demolish is almost never used; if you haven't applied a hit bonus first, it can be just frustrating to keep missing.

In wild battles, Sandstorm’s protection of low-level pets can be of great value, while the Idol’s Humanoid health regeneration racial combined with its huge health pool provides 69 healing every time the Idol does damage, which means it can carry pets for a long time before it needs a heal. When you know what families of wild pets you are facing, there are usually faster and more specialised pets to use, but the Idol is always reliable.

See also the Void-Scarred Anubisath, which also has the Sandstorm and Deflection combo, and with its extra ability options may be better in many cases.

Other Info
The Anubisath Idol is a versatile pet, and you should definitely have one. But this pet is highly overrated. When it comes to time efficient strategies you won't see Anubisath Idol. Oftentimes Sandstorm's RNG drives you crazy.
