This happened to me too, it was because my lvl 1 carry pet was swapped into the fight and was instantly killed. The carry pet should never be swapped in. I changed the last line of TDS to read:
change(#2) [self(#1).dead]
and it's worked as intended so far.

First time: did not work for me. I just used script without actually following what's going on, and found both my pets dead when the last enemy pet had around 60% HP.
Second time: worked very successful.
So for me it was 50% success rate. (edited)
