Levelling pet can take 916 damage (or 1374 critical damage) - beasts will take more, elementals will take less. A level 1 magical pet should be fine 90% of the time according to the strategy author.
If Corporal Hammer dies in round 4 because of a critical hit from Solar Beam, continue normally until Venus dies in round 7. Then bring in your Snaplasher and continue as written from round 11.
