Substitutes:

Note: You have selected a substitute pet.
The strategy might fail if you use it with this pet instead of the one the strategy creator intended.

The substitute finder looks for these criteria in relation to the original pet:
  • Same family
  • Has the required skills
  • Has the required stats (if specified)
  • Ignores specific breed requirements for the main pet, as breeds can be very different for substitutes

High XP
At least one of the pets for this strategy require the use of a specific breed.
Not every strategy can be bullet proof. This is one of them. You might have to restart it, since there are some random elements that increase the risk of your pets failing. Don't blame them, please!
This strategy is using pets obtainable from the Wow Trading Card Game (TCG) or the auction house for potentially high sums of gold.
This strategy is using pets obtainable only from the WoW In-Game Shop for Battle.net Balance or real money.
Level 10+
You can use this strategy to carry a low level pet to give it experience.
Some instructions are more difficult to follow than others. That's exactly what you might find in this strategy!
Script
The strategy offers a Script that can be used with the Pet Battle Script addon. You can copy the script by clicking on the button to the left of the pets.
At least one pet in the strategy cannot be obtained anymore. If you have it, congrats!
A Strategy Curator found this strategy to be especially helpful and higlighted it with this tag to give it more exposure.
In Dragonflight Patch 10.2, the ability Time Bomb has been changed. This tag is marking strategies using Time Bomb so they can be reviewed.

TD Script for a suggested level pet swap after your strider dies. Makes it possible to level lv.1 pets. Tested it on several characters and it worked every time.

ability(Pump:297) [self.round=1]

The enemy AoE killed my level 1 & 3 Elelmental pet with the first move, level 5 seems to survive may depend on the type, other than that good, quick strategy & script thanks (edited)

Yeah, with Sunlight hitting for 207, the only level 1 safe pets would be mech, magic, and if your critters aren't crit. (edited)

Great strat!

If you use a pet with Power 315 or above (Not sure exact amount) and above 268 speed (IE: P/P Voidskimmer then you can 1 shot the 2nd pet and level pet takes less damage.

Edit: Doing it with this way ^^ it took 10 rounds, 1 min 11 seconds. (edited)

Strat works like a charm. I could only fight Durian once today (4/18/22). I hope it's not been changed?

Oops my bad. Only good with class trial. I should have checked your comments first :)

Works as of Pre-patch 9.0, can even throw a level pet in still but remember, you can only fight him once.

Nessahelyan wrote on 2021-03-24 12:07:19

Thanks, interesting idea. I'll keep it in mind and try it out when I get closer to the finishing Family Familiar. Still only about 70% done.

TDScript for Fluffyrock's strat below which has Beaky kill your strider so you can swap in a much lower level carry pet. Line 2 will swap in your carry pet as soon as Beaky comes in if Pump crits and one-shots Roots.

The green paw is in regards to the trainer being part of the Family Familiar achievements, and not to do with it being repeatable.

Shenk

wrote on 2020-03-28 04:51:20

little fun fact: the three elementals in gnomeregan have green paws too *flies away*

Milundaria

wrote on 2021-04-11 19:18:57

Oh! I never knew that the green paws is really about being the Family Familiar achievement either, I always thought it signified better exp and repeatable for pet leveling! Now, I'm going to go look at the elementals in Gnomeregan!

Halye

wrote on 2020-11-20 08:06:34

still worked in prepatch as smooth as always! :) (did not use a lvling pet but the strider and chrominius had no issues)

huldu

wrote on 2020-11-01 01:04:23

Not sure why it says 10+ required for leveling pet? The pet enters the fight, then leaves the same round so it can easily be level 1 since there is no AE damage in that fight. This has to be a change to how pet battles in general because I don't remember this being the case way back.

Gráinne

wrote on 2020-11-01 01:33:37

So I just looked at it, and logged.

No, the pet doesn't leave same round. If the Strider died and you brought the level pet in as a replacement, it would be same round, but a deliberate swap away from a live pet is your move for that round.

The level pet took 138 damage from Sunlight cleave in the first round, and 244 from Stun Seed in R9. And then, of course, you can figure in the possibility of strong damage based on race, and crits.

Smaragdia#2535

wrote on 2020-10-13 11:12:12

I used Lil' Tarecgosa instead of Chrominius. Worked just fine.

Not Owner of strat but did test in Beta: Works just fine as it is.

Jere wrote on 2019-07-20 20:58:43

Something that isn't crit safe, but if you want a quick good chance at a level 1 strat:
Abyssal Eel (Stormsong Valley Vendor) - Water Jet, Acid Rain, Pump
Carry pet that can survive the first sunlight aoe (most 1+ pets)
Emmigosa (legion quest) - X, Arcane Storm, Surge of Power

R1: Pump
R2: Acid Rain (no crit here or it may fail)
R3: Pump (it is important that you don't kill the first enemy here, so no crit either)
R4: Pump
R5: Water Jet (kills first enemy)
R6: Pump (kills the second enemy)
R7: Swap in carry pet as third enemy enters liftoff
R8: Swap back in Abyssal Eel to take the lift off and die to the stun seed
R9: Arcane Storm
R10: Surge of Power

Again, this isn't crit safe. If you kill the first enemy with pump, the strat won't work. The abyssal eel was chosen because it is easy to get, it's speed is perfect in that it is faster than the first enemy and slower than the 2nd. This is important because you want to kill the 2nd enemy in one hit *after* it puts stun seed on you (this is to ensure the eel dies at the correct spot later and that the 2nd enemy doesn't get off the -hit debuff on your team). Emmigosa was just chosen cause she is easy to get. Any pet that can do >=1404 damage in 2 hits to the flying enemy will work.

Leveling level 1 with Spring strider P/S (same pet different name)
Works most of the time.

Turn 1 Pump (if lvl 1 pet dies, heal and restart)
Turn 2 Cleansing Rain
Turns 3+ Water Jet until Sunny dies
Roots comes in
Turn 1 Pump
Turn 2 Swap to your Level Pet
Turn 3 Swap back to Strider
Turn 4 Pass
Turn 5 Water jet (Eiter you kill Roots or you die with Roots low hp)
IF Strider dies to early, finish it off with Chrominius.
Beaky comes in
Turn 1 Pass (because Beaky goes in the air)
Turn 3 Howl
Turn 4 Surge of Power

Sophdog wrote on 2017-05-24 06:02:53

Level pet can be Level 1. Just swap it in when Sunny starts "Recovering" and swap back out. There is no back line damage, and your Strider will have enough health to finish off Sunny and Roots as normal. If Sunny crits, maybe not, but I have tested 3 times without a problem.

Hearte wrote on 2017-06-16 22:08:42

Wish I saw this before engaging today. Great tip!

Anonymous wrote on 2017-06-24 06:52:47

It's even easier than that. Just keep on going through until your Strider dies. When it dies, swap in the level 1 pet to replace the Strider. Then instantly swap to Chrominius; Howl, Surge and done :)

Mergas wrote on 2017-08-02 03:56:51

I tried your version, Anonymous. Roots or Beaky uses an Entangling or Crushing Root attack that killed my level 1. I didn't have the time to stop and restart to try Sophdogs' version, but I suspect it will work with a level 1.
