Substitutes:

1
Note: You have selected a substitute pet.
The strategy might fail if you use it with this pet instead of the one the strategy creator intended.

The substitute finder looks for these criteria in relation to the original pet:
  • Same family
  • Has the required skills
  • Has the required stats (if specified)
  • Ignores specific breed requirements for the main pet, as breeds can be very different for substitutes

1 / 2

Medium XP
At least one of the pets for this strategy require the use of a specific breed.
Not every strategy can be bullet proof. This is one of them. You might have to restart it, since there are some random elements that increase the risk of your pets failing. Don't blame them, please!
This strategy is using pets obtainable from the Wow Trading Card Game (TCG) or the auction house for potentially high sums of gold.
This strategy is using pets obtainable only from the WoW In-Game Shop for Battle.net Balance or real money.
You can use this strategy to carry a low level pet to give it experience.
Some instructions are more difficult to follow than others. That's exactly what you might find in this strategy!
Script
The strategy offers a Script that can be used with the Pet Battle Script addon. You can copy the script by clicking on the button to the left of the pets.
At least one pet in the strategy cannot be obtained anymore. If you have it, congrats!
Staff Pick
A Strategy Curator found this strategy to be especially helpful and higlighted it with this tag to give it more exposure.
In Dragonflight Patch 10.2, the ability Time Bomb has been changed. This tag is marking strategies using Time Bomb so they can be reviewed.

Is it breed specific? Day two of trying this one and it fails at the second pet every try. Bombling or mechantula. (edited)

(OP) DragonsAfterDark

wrote on 2020-09-26 14:50:02

The Bombling and Mechantula only have one breed.

I haven't run the exact numbers for the Mechantula, but the Bombling version is 100% foolproof by the numbers, as in it cannot fail:

I replied to your DM, but I'll reply here, too in case anyone else has the same question.

The closest substitute is Squirky:

Bubble > Stampede > Punch > Punch

Beta comes in

Stampede until dead

Happy battling!

Does not even begin to work on elite mode. It takes an additional hit with the marionette and he lives, but the bombling gets hit with dark claw and then run over..he has maybe two hits, not four. If you can get his explosion off, it's not strong enough to kill. That leaves your ion cannon, which does maybe 500 damage and then has to sit and recharge. Has never worked for me.

Just to mention, there is no "elite mode". The battle is exactly the same whether you're doing for the first time in the introductory quest or subsequently in the weekly. The ONLY difference is that you can't heal between battles in the weekly (unless you log onto an alt, use a bandage, and relog very quickly, but let's not say that in public. :P :)

Apart from the log, and now the tutorial video, I've used and logged this strat several times. As I said in a comment below, and as DragonsAfterDark covered in the video, the substitutes CAN fail, though they mostly won't. If done correctly with the recommended pets, it's arithmetically impossible for this strat to fail.

wrote on 2020-06-19 17:55:16

I'm having the same problem. Trying this for the first time today, tried this and a couple other teams, I just get annihilated before even getting to the 3rd pet. They all have the "Elite" buff: "Reduces all damage taken by 50%". I'm guessing that's the difference. I don't know why they're buffed, maybe because it's the pet battle bonus event?

Gráinne

wrote on 2020-06-19 19:29:21

These Boss pets always have the Elite buff, or the Boss buff, so that has nothing to do with the pet event.

It completely baffles me how anyone can fail with this strat. I'd really love to see a log from someone who failed.

See the YouTube link just above for a step by step walkthrough.

Nothing changes between the first & weekly runs except that you're not able to heal.

Kooki wrote on 2020-05-10 17:44:18

The script is a bit off for me. My Scrapyard Tunneler died early, so he should use Explode right after the first death. Which make my Menagerie Custodian to use Ion Cannon way to early. The script should be edited that it uses first a few Shock and Awe for the right health on the enemy.

(OP) DragonsAfterDark

wrote on 2020-03-31 18:22:20

I think you're on the wrong strat. None of those pets are used here.

eta: I can't guarantee scripts when someone chooses to use alternate pets to those indicated in the strat. (edited)

Ultratonk works in the third slot too which saves the Darkmoon Tonk for later (if you don't have two.)

I took this advice. Ultratonk: 1, 2, 2.

All I had to do was: Shock & Awe then Demolish. Won the fight.

The middle section of this does not work and does not nearly enough damage

In what way? I've done this a fair few times and it works just fine.

Belatherix, you should specify exactly which pets you used, since there are substitutes, and which breeds. You also should say exactly where the battle deviated from your expectations. I just tried this twice, with two different sets of pets, and though I was trying with the second set to give it the maximum chance of failing, it still sailed through smoothly.

I suspect you just got something wrong. Test again, and keep a log, or at least note exactly where something died unexpectedly. (edited)

At first, I couldn't believe that is possible.

As you see, Beta gets off only one Strike on the Tunneller, with racial up, for 430 damage. Even with a crit, that would be 645, still not enough to kill even a low-health S/S breed (1367 HP).

Then I remembered the AoE earlier:

Round 2", -- [8]
[Twilight Meteorite] dealt 308 damage to your Scrapyard Tunneler.", -- [11]

So if that was a crit as well, that would be 462. Plus the possible crit on Strike with the racial up, gives 462+645=1107, which is still not enough to bring the Tunneler to Failsafe. The nech revives with 1367/5 = 273 HP, which is more than a single hit of Hunting Party. To bring the Tunneler to 0 and kill it, then, you would then need either the first or the third hit of Hunting Party to be a crit as well.

I don't see any other combination of circumstances that could kill even a lowest-health S/S Tunneler before it could Explode. Three crits in exactly the right places. That's amazingly unlucky! Don't buy any lottery tickets this week. :P

Of course, you didn't actually say you were using an S/S Tunneler. I'm just working on worst case. Hm, what are the speeds of Alpha and Beta? I think they're 284 and 280 but I can't go back now to check. Were you by any chance running a pet slower than that? The Tunneler has lots of breeds, and only S/S and S/B are fast enough. What breed was your Tunneler?

The first time I saw this battle, I thought Marionette. The Marionette is so good here that eveything else is hard to get wrong. So I immediately started work on how to make it fail, within the constraints. :)

I tried it with a low-health S/S Scrapyard Tunneler and a Tonk. The Tunneler was 11 HP away from Failsafe, but as far as I can see, it would have needed 2 out of 3 crits from Alpha's Hunting Party to fail, which is a pretty tough ask.

So while there could be a small chance of failure using substitutes on the margins, that chance really is quite small. Nice choice of the Pet Bombling! Brings back memories from Mists, when it was a cheap Mech/Explode pet. And it's not likely to be overused in other strats in the dungeon.

Lovely, safe strat, as usual!
