This can fail with a level 1 pet. Wretch was left with around 19 or so hp when my IS died, so I had to finish it off with my level pet.

Was there a crit on feed? With a P/P the damage should be enough to kill. It's been quite a while since I've used this one is there any changes to HP that you know about?
Looking at the script it had the enemy.hp_can_explode so following that it would have done the extra Toxic smoke (edited)

So closest I got to 19 was able to simulate a 15HP remaining if you get an unlucky timing on feed (Turn 5, increased regen through beast trait) though practically I was never able to get this. Either way I've added an extra step encase you get unlucky.
Thank you for the feedback

I imagine that was it. Seems like he'll use Feed just kind of whenever, if at all. I had him use it on round three in the one I just did, and all he'd been hit by at that point was Explode. But in the one before that he used it after Toxic Smoke. (edited)

Similar strat:
Seaborne spore, Turn 2, Glowing Toxin
and Dibbler after Explode(ing) the Spore.
Toxic Smoke
Storm Coil
Explode

Great sounding strat!

Personally I don't have both those pets :( but I really love to have them! :p (edited)
