The Author has been gone for an 'Unknown' amount of time, and given the high variance of success, a third pet has been added with additional instructions in case of poor RNG. It really all depends on how your Darkmoon Zeppelin rolls with its Missile hits.

I did this today. My level pet was a level 17 Stardust. I tried to do this strategy 3 times without success. On the 4th time I swapped my levelling pet to a level 25 - what do you know, I didn't even need the third pet! Seems to be a bit of RNG, but they are great pets for the job.

If you try to time the Explode when you're ABOUT to die on the Zep, it's a little easier. Can be victim to the ole RNG, though.

I went ahead and followed this strategy, just tweaked it a little.
So, I used Explode a little earlier than the guide said. (Before his 2nd pet casts Bonestorm) which secured me a good bit of damage as the chain of events has me exploding right after the Zeppelin activates it's passive.
Then, I followed the rest. Worked like a charm! Hope this helps whoever doesn't have Direbeak Hatchlings or Mechanical Axebeaks like me! :)
