Didnt have a second cub with LVL25, so I tried with an Arcane Eye - Eye Blast and Mana Surge did it.

Failed 2x in a row by about 1 turn. Used the Eye of Corruption's Eyeblast first instead, its slow keeps Rufus from going first and getting 2 hits on you every time. Ended up not even needing the 3rd pet at all once I did that and a single use of Life Exchange

I used Hexxer as 1st pet and Brightpaw as 3rd. Even though Hexxer died before Rufus, Brightpaw was still able to claw it back with Bite
