The vast majority of the pets we get are, effectively, filler - at least, as far as battling goes.
But each expansion, the devs sprinkle a handful of exceptional pets, and several with new combinations of family/ability. They really have to, or we'd never use the new ones.
And so strat setters use the pets best suited. most natural, for the battle, to make it clean and hopefully 100%, and they pick these pets from those handfuls.
But that isn't actually necessary; it's just good to guarantee people the best chance of getting through it quickly. And so they don't get complaints about strats that fail 5% of the time.
And, as you have deftly showed, that means that they then get complaints about using less owned pets. :P
Personally, I always do the challenge battles myself, and I tend to use the pets from Mists and a couple from WoD (Ikky, Starlette, because they make some things so easy).
I have no doubt this battle is do-able with Mists pets only. Feel free to use them; I will! :D
