PET NEWS - BY DRAGONSAFTERDARK
!!! The drop rate for the Inert Ash will increase in Patch 10.1.5 !!!

The Secret Finders have done it again!

Epic#0815 in Secret Finding Discord discovered a fair share of the key information needed to collect the pet Wishwing!

Remte was kind enough to transcribe the steps for us, outlined below:

1. Ash Feathers x 20

– To get Ash Feathers, you need to buy and use Ash Feather Amulet from Griftah at Obsidian Citadel on Wrathion's side. Coordinates: /way #2022 25.6 54.2 Griftah

The amulet will give you a 60-minute buff, during which time the Ash Feathers will spawn on the ground around you. They can spawn anywhere, so you're not limited to The Dragon Isles if you want to throw on the buff and go do other things!

2. Smoldering Phoenix Ash x 15

– To get Smoldering Phoenix Ash, you need to kill phoenix mobs anywhere in The Waking Shores.

I found my best luck making a circuit in Dragonbane's Keep until the Siege came through. Then I headed over to the Obsidian Citadel. The cliff above the magma section where the wyrm can spawn will 6 phoenix spawns that sit on the ledge/ on some outcroppings leading up to a cave. Then there are two phoenixes that will also fly overhead in a circuit that are in range of ranged attacks without mounting.

From Cepter in the comments:
[The] best place for me to farm the Phoenix mobs was actually /way #2022 64.66 29 above the rock there's 6-8 you can kill them fast then head around the area on the rocks more Phoenix sitting on rocks, instead of the ones flying around.

The drop rate for the Smoldering Phoenix Ash is about 4% at the locations indicated above. It will take you anywhere from 2.5-4 hours to collect all the ash depending on whether or not you've been saving the ash, as some of us have, for a just-in-case just like this.

3. Phoenix Ash Talisman

– To get Phoenix Ash Talisman, you need to head to Zektar (requires some zone campaign to see him) who sells it for 20x Inert Phoenix Ash, 10x Sacred Phoenix Ash, & the Glittering Phoenix Ember

From Wowhead:
Before you start, make sure you have done the Worlds of Draenor campaign quest at least 5/9. You can check from the achievement, 'Between Arak and a Hard Place'. You can also confirm this by going to Spires of Arak and check if you can see Zektar. You'll need Shadows Gather, Secrets of the Talonpriests, The Gods of Arak, Legacy of the Apexis, and Terokk's Legend.

Zektar is in the Spires of Arak, southeast of Veil Tarokk at /way #542 52.0 50.4 Zektar

3.1 Inert Phoenix Ash x 20

– To get Inert Phoenix Ash, you need to kill Scorching Elementals and Living Blazes in Ungoro Crater around the central caldera/volcano area.

These spawns will be a gray level for max characters, so they will be one-shotted! In 10.1.5 the droprate for the Inert Ash was greatly increased and added to the loot table for the Living Blazes.

3.2 Sacred Phoenix Ash x 10

– To get Sacred Phoenix Ash, you need to loot piles of ash all around Spires of Arak in urn/basket-shaped containers

These piles of ash will be in the magical smoking pots in areas with Arrakoa 'settlements'. I will include an image below where I personally found all these containers, but I did not find the ash at all these spawns.

You can sit at places that have multiple pots, or you can travel around the zone.

My suggestion for a route would be:

  • Fly to the Apexis Excavation then head directly east to the Veil Akraz spawn point. Head into Zellek's Hut and check the container. This is where I found 3 of my 10 Ash!
  • Head back to the Apexis Excavation and fly to Crow's Crook. There's a container in the hut next to the raven flightmaster.
  • Now fly to Veil Terokk. There will be one container next to the flight master, one in the hut across from the Pet Battle NPC, then one in the open to the right of that hut in an altar area.
  • From Veil Terokk fly on your mount to the group of three points to the south-east. I found a couple of ash in this location, and it will have three containers.
  • Either had back to Veil Tarokk to take the flightpath to Talon's Watch, or head there directly on your mount. There will be two containers in the small area near the flightpath.
  • Now fly over to Sethekk Hollow on your mount. There are five (maybe six?) containers in this area spread out throughout the ruins. There's a spot behind an unnamed Prophet mob that has two side-by-side.
  • Optional: Head back to Talon Watch and fly down to the Pinchwhistle Gearworks and check the two locations indicated on the map.
  • Fly back to Apexis Excavation and start again.

This farm took me a few hours, maybe less. It took roughly the same amount of time as the 'wait for a spawn' method, as someone I noticed doing this while I was flying around ended up in Un'goro with me not long after I finished the Sacred farm. If you take the wait farm, I would grab coordinates from wowhead for definite, confirmed spots, or just chill in Zellek's Hut. I found the most ash there (personally).

3.3 Glittering Phoenix Ember

– To get Glittering Phoenix Ember, you need to kill Alysrazor during Cataclysm Firelands' Timewalking. This does not appear to drop from the non-Timewalking version of the raid.

4. Final Step: Tarjin the Blind

The final step: Go to Tarjin the Blind with 20x Ash Feather, 15x Smoldering Phoenix Ash, and the Phoenix Ash Talisman, and he will have the "Tale of the Phoenix" quest for you to turn them in.

Tarjin is in The Waking Shores, and can be found at /way #2022 16.0 62.6 Tarjin the Blind

If you haven't completed any of Tarjin's Tales yet, you may need to do before you can turn your items in.

We at Xu-Fu's wish you all the best in your pet collecting endeavors, and happy battling!

"Zektar is in the Spires of Arak, southwest of Veil Tarokk at /way #542 52.0 50.4 Zektar"

Please correct this to state that, in fact, Zektar is southeast of Veil Terokk. I thought, "Doesn't sound too far away from that FP, I'll just fly without bothering with the coords!"

...I had to consult the zone map in the end. xD

Waited for 10.1.5 to farm this out and it didn't take to long. The true bottle neck was farming Smoldering Phoenix Ash due to the abysmal drop rate. Found the best way was to run Neltharus over and over.

Inert Phoenix Ash didn't take long at all due to the increased drop rate and the almost zero competition. Roughly an hour. (Pro tip: If you are a hunter, turn on track elementals it makes it 10x easier as you aren't flying aimlessly)

Trick for gathering Ash Feathers. Do a Dig in Zaralek Caverns, Due to the confined space the feathers spawn almost on top of each other and it was very easy and quick to get all of the feathers that you need.

If it werent for the Smoldering Phoenix Ash i could almost see farming multiple of these birds. (edited)

In regard to the Inert Phoenix Ash, the 0.07% drop rate listed by Wowhead that you cited is not accurate. The Scorching Elemental mobs have been in the game since Vanilla, while this item in question has only been in their loot table since 10.0.

DragonsAfterDark

wrote on 2023-03-30 17:10:47

Yes, and the Secret Finders have known they'd need the item for something for a while, they just didn't know what. Many of those people who were trying to figure the secret out farmed the Inert Ash ahead of time and have the Wowhead Looter addon.

Zalid

But Karsi is correct. The 0.07% is scewed by years of this mob being killed without that item dropping. It is more accurately around a 5% drop from what I have seen. It's still going to take hours of farming, but not the months that 0.07% would be.
So far it's taken me 2 hours to get 13. So 4 hours sounds about right. (edited)

DragonsAfterDark

And I was only getting 1 (eta: to 2. I was out there for ~2.5 hours and I have 4) per hour, so what does that % out to? And this was before news broke on Wowhead. So I really only had 4 or 5 mobs killed out from under me. (edited)

Here's the best I can do in terms of a somewhat realistic estimate of the actual drop rate:

The Wowhead page for Scorching Elemental has been backed up by archive.org a few times in the past. You can figure out from that how many lootings had been recorded up to certain dates, For instance:

7/2/2012 -- 110,608 recorded lootings
10/10/2018 -- 143,347 recorded lootings (this was the last time it was archived)

That works out to 14.3 loots per day over that time period. We can use this to extrapolate and make a rough estimate as to what the loot count was at immediately before the Dragonflight pre-patch was released (when the Inert Phoenix Ash was added to the live game).

The pre-patch came out on 10/25/2022, so let's estimate the loot number for 10/24/2022. Using the 14.3 loots/day number, we can estimate the loot count up to that date was 164,440. The current count (on 3/31/2023) is 167,336.

So, there have been roughly 2,896 Scorching Elemental lootings recorded since the Inert Phoenix Ash was added to the live game, and 119 Inert Phoenix Ash drops recorded. That gives us a drop rate of: 4.1%.

Of course, this is just a rough estimate, and there are a number of factors in play over the course of several years which would cause the loot rate to wax and wane, so I don't expect the 14.3/day number to be exactly precise. It allows us to estimate at least a somewhat realistic drop rate, though, which is better than what we previously had.

If it were me, I'd just write that the drop rate is "approximately 3-5%" and call it a day. (edited)

Everyone and their mother are trying to farm the Pheonix Ash right now. It seems more worthwhile to do the other steps and wait on this section until the craze dies down.

Really nice analysis Karsi.
I've actually not farmed it since I posted my earlier response. So maybe I should return to it as it should be a little quieter now.
Also keep up the excellent work DAD (lol, that looks so wrong) as these articles are great :)

Great article! This pet was a pain. Took me 13 hours to get the dust from ungoro mobs. 18 hours the whole deal. Totally worth it tho. I named mine Miracle :)

Got my first 15 in a great group on a dead shard, took 2.5 hours. Got the next 4 on my own 3 hours (no groups and I tried to start one but no sign-ups) The last one took almost 4 hours in a group...painful :( (edited)
