On my third try I got lucky and Azerite Geode died during the Mana Surge, so Azerite Elemental took the tail end of it. I didn't get a Tail Sweep off, but it set it up so that I used Ancient Blessing once then Emerald Bite three times and the Elemental was dead.

Not a viable strategy with a PP Nether Faerie Dragon. It can't get Evanescence off in time to block the initial attack, and gets wiped out too soon.

That sounds entirely possible. The SDH, which is the pet suggested, has 309 speed, but because no speed restrictions were applied, the automatic substitution function allows any breed of NFD.

Even the author suggested specifically that an S/S NFD should work, and that the speed of the opening pet was important.

Confirmed. Your NFD gets walloped if slower - needs to be >273 to outspeed first two pets. I'll note it for the Curators to look at.

I finally got this to work by using Emerald Dream + Ancient Blessing immediately after the 1st Emerald bite instead of the 2nd, and continued using the Emerald Dream + Ancient blessing combo on cool down between emerald bites.

Trying to get 2 emerald bites in before casting emerald dream meant my health dropped too low before it could heal my proto welp. (edited)

This worked perfectly for me when I adjusted the Emerald Dream cast to sub-900 health, then cast Ancient Blessing again, then 2 Emerald Bites and win.

strat did not work. you may want to cast the heal before he gets to below 800 hp, as mine was over 1000, then got hit, and then was at like 845-890 down to 400 when I cast it, Then the 3rd pet took me out. :(
