Sometimes works and sometimes doesnt. Seems to depend on when the Skitterling dies. I added the Microbot 8D as the third pet with the same abilities as the XD to make sure Gorgemouth dies regardless of what happens with the skitterling.

This worked great for me with an SS Skitterling and a H/P Microbot the first time I used it, but now it's not. Gorgemouth has about 356 health left after using Ion Cannon. Not sure if something was changed in this fight since it's first appearance.

Same, there was a hotfix on December first thar modified the enemy passive hability.

What did they change back then? I can see that they did replace the common Spiked Skin aura (316) with a new one (2428) in Dec 7th update but I don't see a difference between them.

Took out the S/S breed for now... really looks like it's not a good choice because it has the lower HP combined with the weakest attacks of all 3 breeds. Might work, but then you'll better have a good backup in 3rd slot. (Guess I'll have to add that when I have more time to test and adjust script, it may happen to all breeds and I can't simply add Alert! and lose Shattered Defenses for the big hit) (edited)
