I think my favorite was Eye Of Corruption with Chaos Beam x 2, Curse of Doom, Nightmare for its moves but it ended up being just as fast. Dibbler was a more common pet I decided. There might be ranges where savage talon fails, but I haven't had it happen. I'm using savage talon since it more often than not saves a turn. If it doesn't work for you, try using quills. Been doing it more and it is a little wonky and dependent on the other team not critting. But my stats are 25 wins and 3 loses, so not too bad.
