Swapped to two levelling pets after placing a Decoy on turn 1, and had no issues getting xp for them both. Axebeak soloed all three of the enemy pets. I used a HP breed of Axebeak.

It's a little dicey but I've managed a 2 pet level strat relatively often.
1st leveling pet: level 1+
2nd leveling pet needs about 500hp to take Atherton's first big hit
Lil'Bling (2,2,1) does all the work
T1: any move with first leveling pet
T2: swap to 2nd leveling pet (gets hit by Atherton)
T3: swap to Lil'Bling
T4+: Extra Plating > Make it Rain > Inflation
