Used this strategy because I didn't have any fancy-schmancy pets. Worked just fine with Elekk Plushie. The grub is a real boss in this fight. You just gotta use your Leaps and Consumes correctly, don't waste Consumes on guaranteed miss rounds. (edited)

When you bring in your grub/maggot etc... I think the better option is to leap then to consume. As Orpho said Comsume does indeed miss (twice in my case) with Murkimus is in the air.

This strat didn't even come close for me - I used a 17 Direhorn Runt for the first attack/carry pet, a 25 rare Rapana Whelk, and the Jungle Grub. I didn't even get Murkimus down - Consumes often missed when Murkimus was in the air. Murkalot was still at almost full health, and of course my Direhorn Runt wasn't up to that task.

Second attempt, Deathy got my Snail down to 79 hp with Deep Breath with Murkalot and Murkimus still at nearly full health (1499 and 1820 respectively). Hard to figure out how to make this work...

Okay, so the third attempt I used Sticky Goo whenever Murkimus was Leaping or when Mukalot had the shield/block up, and I managed to beat them (all of the Consumes hit).
