I wasn't a fan of the damage variation on Chomp, which introduced an unnecessary element of RNG to the strat. I swapped it out for the Jade Tentacle. Scratch has a flat damage, and between Shell Shield and Thorns it keeps Mist Wraith from doing too much damage to the Tentacle, and mitigates healing from Plagued Blood.

I lost the first 2 times using the step by step. 3rd time, I just used Chomp only and finally won. I did need all 3 pets this way.

Considering you can't hit the enemy on turn 2 and 3, and hitting them on their undead round does nothing, it likely has more to do with Chomp's variance in damage, and possible crits from Mistwraith, versus only using Chomp.
