If that's what happened to you, you might try using Ikky alone on the Spirit and then two backup pets, specialised to handle the Spirit's back line. Or one of the more modern strats, like Mutanis' here, using pets with tricks that weren't available back in Draenor.

I change it a bit so I could use Curse of Doom where it'll be more helpfull. Its as follows.
Turn 1: Haunt
Bring in Ikky
Turn 1: Black Claw
Turn 2+: Flock - Cursed Spirit dies (Ikky will probably will die here too, if not Flock until Ikky dies)
An enemy Pet comes in
Bring back your Val'kyr
Turn 1: Curse of Doom
Turn 2: Pass
Turn 3: Shadow Shock until your Val'kyr dies you may or may not kill Tree Python. (But the Curse of doom will hit tree python bringing it down to a couple hundred hit points.)
Bring in your Emerald Proto-Whelp
If Tree Python lives one Emerald Bite will finish it off.
Turn 1: Emerald Presence
Turn 2: Emerald Bite
Turn 3: Emerald Bite
Turn 4: Emerald Bite
Last pet will die on either the 3rd or 4th Emerald Bite
RNG may change on this a bit. So far with 3 tries it did almost exactly the same for me. So far.

I only had a P/P Emerald Proto-Whelp and it was not fast enough to go first against the Tree Python. However, modifying this strategy very slightly eventually got me the win.
First thing was to keep resetting the fight until the Tree Python did not have "Counter Strike". Second, you may also get unlucky and have your Ikky one shot from a crit (happened to me 3 times in a row!).
Now, in the strat it says to cast "Curse Of Doom" as soon as you bring you Val'kyr back in. The Tree Python would "Burrow" and I'd miss. So I just passed instead, then cast "Curse of Doom". This was enough to then follow standard Emerald Proto-Whelp protocol instead
