I used this team and technique with the first 2 pets. I used the nameless octopode as my third pet with shadow shock (instead of the shadowback crawler with shadow slash). It worked perfectly.

I didn't have any of the listed Slot #1 pets, so I ended up using Inky with Tentacle Stab, Bubble, and Dive, and was able make this work.
