The chance of a crit without effects or buffs is always 5%. But this is in Darkness, so with 10% Miss, the chance of a crit hitting is 4.5%.

So why 2.9%?

Bloodbiter's Proto-Strike has a damage range.of 366-549. You will find the probability curve for a damage range on Discodoggy's site https://pvppetbattles.com/2014/11/01/burn-damage-distribution/

With a damage range, Kalagren has determined that not every crit will be a problem, only those that do >620. I presume that the damage range curve predicts ~65% chance of damage that, in a crit, will inflict 620+. So, .65 * 4.5 = ~2.9%

Cause I have 2 min free and I like math here’s how’d I’d do it(as an approximation):

549-366+1=184
414x1.5=621
Therefore 136/184=74%
0.05x0.74x0.9=0.033 so I’d say approx (can’t find symbol on my ipad) 3%

No it's not correct. The curve is not flat; it's a parabola, or at least parabola-ish. See Disco's workings. Don't get me wrong; I don't actually care what the exact answer is. I assumed that Kalagren had worked it out from a table initially. But it will be somewhere around 3%, and "somewhere around 3%" is close enough for my pirposes. :D

I'm at work so only getting a quick read. Is there any more info on the WOD 6.0 changes. It's really quite interesting if it works as described (basically crits always roll 'high') (edited)

So I inputted all the data into excel to start working on calculating the exact figure (for my fun and enjoyment - nerd alert) BUT half way through I realise what was said about the calculations “ Critical strikes are ALWAYS positive.” which means a crit is always from the mid point up. The mid point for this damage range is 458 therefore a crit would be 688 which is above the allowance given meaning a crit will always cause a failure. Unless I’m missing something, I have just finished a 12 hour shift on 3 hours sleep.

Nice catch. If indeed "Critical strikes are ALWAYS positive” then the rest follows, and the chance of a 620+ crit will be the same chance as any crit - in this case, 4.5%.

If anyone wants to run it a couple of hundred times to check whether this was and/or is still true, I'll be happy not to! :P
