I used Deflection on round 1 with Stormlash, which might have made the difference. Since the Idol can possibly solo the fight, Deflecting for Call Lightning means the moth may only need 1 hit on Whiskers (which is how it was for me). Since the moth could very well obliterate Whiskers, in my opinion it's more important to use Deflection on Call Lightning than Dive.

Occasionally the Idol dies before Stormlash does.
Either way this is a very reliable strategy and will take a level 1 pet to level 11 with the Safari Hat.
