Swapped in Enchanted Broom (2-1-2) for the gorger as per the strat posted by Fungus and it worked on the first try! Still seems to be some RNG involved, but hopefully it will help someone:

Turn 1 Sandstorm
Turn 2 Wind-Up
Turn 3 Wind-Up, restart if Miss
Turn 4 Wind-Up
Turn 5 Wind-Up, restart if Miss
Turn 6 Wind-Up, Leftovers 1 is in his extra round and dies.
Turn 7 Batter, if Enchanted Broom dies here or sooner, restart. (Happens very rarely.)
Turn 8 Wind-Up, Enchanted Broom dies.
