Poro is based on the flightless bird from New Zealand called the Kākāpō, they are so endangered that every known living Kākāpō has a name (about 250 alive).
While I don't know where the name comes from, my guess is either named after the Māori plant called the Pōroporo which they can sometimes be seen feeding on. OR possible "pōro" meaning "ball" and the fact it does kind of look like a cute ball of fur (if it rolled itself up) :p
