Disgusting Oozeling alone solo-ed this fight for me in Shadowlands pre-patch as of November 3rd, 2020. This strategy is still effective.

put a lvl 1 transmutant in first slot, does not kill...followed rest of strat, I used 2 oily slimelings
a b/b and an h/p...transmutant got 5 lvls only the b/b slimeling died

Experience obtained depends on a number of enemy pets, among other things, so a single opponent tends to give little. Usually, it's 218-418 exp, and we've got a Pet Week, giving 954 on average… each chunk of exp counts if you hate partial levels!
