I'd suggest just swapping the Searing Scorchling to slot one.... Scorched Earth -> Flame Breath -> Conflagrate -> Flame Breath. Gives more turns for the DoTs to tick, and the Water Spirit can use Dive to dodge some incoming damage while Geyser/Whirlpool finishes the job.

This strategy regularly fails and when it does succeed it is at a very slim margins. Not recommended.

I used Tiny Twister, Dark Phoenix Hatchling, and Lava Crab

Fly By, Call Lightning, Fly By (Twister dies)
Immolate, Dark Rebirth, Burn, Immolate (Phoenix dies)
Conflagrate, Cauterize, Survival (burn damage should finish him off if Conflag didn't)

Worked pretty well. My tiny Twister lives a little longer, my Hatchling had to use Dark Rebirth one round later than suggested (otherwise it wouldn't proc). Lava Crab wasn't really needed (could have been crit luck though) The crab would have been abled to finish him anyway. Thanks!

Slight variation on mentioned tactics:

Pandaren Water Spirit, following steps in this guide.

When PWS dies, bring in Fel Flame. Use Scorched Earth, then Conflagrate. My pet died here because of a crit from Ruinhoof. Otherwise you might get in a Burn.

Bring in Ominous Flame. Conflagrate, then Scorched Earth.

I had a very similar approach and was checking here to see if anyone else had described it. I did exactly what you did (including that I got crit and did not get in a Burn with Fel Flame) until pet 3, which was a Pandaren Fire Spirit for me. I just did Conflagrate->Burn and won.

Change first pet to Tiny Twister - and it will do more damage than Pandaren Spirit in the first spot.

1 Call Lightning
2 wild Winds
3 Bash
456 Wild winds until dead

Ominous flame - in an alternative for 2nd pet.

Lil Raganaros is an alternative for 3rd pet. Conflag and then Sons of Flame if needed

Yes, the team 1 strat failed 5 times, I put in tiny twister and, though I missed the cool 1pt win, it worked flawlessly and I needed just one hit by the Lava Crab to win.

I just couldn't get the Alt. 1 team to work for me. I had to sub Spirit of Summer for the Searing Scorchling that I don't have. Perhaps that was my problem, but they're supposed to the same moveset and Summer actually has a little more health. I was just never able to get off the second spell. That's unusual, because Lazey, your strategies usually work like charms for me. Maybe just my unlucky day.

Anyway, I eventually switched my Pandaren Water Spirit out for a Tiny Twister as suggested by Eyesage and things went much better. Twister does, indeed, do more damage than Water Spirit, and he's pretty sturdy, too.

Thanks, Lazey, for the basic strategy and, Eyesage, for the tweak. And let's not forget how lucky we are that Xu-Fu provides us the space to chat and share.

I didn't have a Pandaren Water Spirit or a Searing Scorchling, but this worked twice.

Water Waveling (221)
Fel Flame (121)
Lava Crab ((121)

Waveling: Geyser, Frost Shock, Ice Lance until the Waveling is dead
Flame: Scorched Earth, Conflgrate, Burn until the Flame is dead
Lava Crab: Conflagrate. One time, that killed it; the other time, Burn killed it. If you still need more time, you've got the Cauterize.

Works nicely. Used an H/P Fel Flame instead of Scorchling though. It's much easier to obtain ;).

I had trouble using the Lava Crab. Swapped that out for a Molten Corgi and used Puppies of the Flame. Bingo!

I only had water spirit so used Lil Rag 1x2 and Molten Corgi 111.

Follow strat above.
Then bring in rag and Smash. Sons of flame. Smash.
If still alive another smash (I managed this and won here on one try).
Bring in corgi. Superbark. Bark.

Strat didnt work for me, so I wrote this:
Alt strat: Pandaren Water Spitit (1,2,2), Fel Flame (1,2,1), Searing Scorchling (1,2,1)
Geyser, water jet, dive, switch to fel flame: scorched earth, conflag (dies), water spirit geyser, dive, jet (dies), scorchling: conflagrate. ended with plently of hp this way.

Can use Spirit of Summer if you don't have Searing Scorchling. It has the same attacks in the same place :)

I used this strat for PWS and FF except i dived on turn 2. Used Electrified Razortooth as 3rd pet. Rip then Blood in the Water.

I used this strat but for the third pet I used pandaren fire spirit, with immolate, cauterize, and burn in place of the scorchling moves. :)

Sure-fire strategy:
1. Tiny Twister. Apply Flyby, then Call Lightning. Reapply Flyby until dead.
2. Tainted Waveling. Acidic Goo, then Creeping Ooze until dead.
3. Skunky Alemental on standby to Barrel Toss if needed.

I like the Tiny Twister part. Different breeds will accomplish different amounts of damage but my P/B breed took off well over half Ruinhoof's hp before it died.
The only thing I did differently was use Wild Winds on round 3. After attempting several opening strats, I found that gave the most bang-for-your-buck.
Finished off with Shard of Cyrukh:
Fel Immolate > Flame Jet.
Also tested one of my S/S Sproutlings as 2nd pet:
Lash > Fist of the Forest worked just as well.

The strategy failed for me first time (got critted hard), so I changed Lava Crab turn 3 to be pass, and then used survival in turn 4. Might not make much difference tho =)

I used H/P Fel Flame insterad of Searing Scorchling and put him in 3rd slot. In second slot I used Shard of Cyrukh, with Volcano followed by a Burn. Fel Flame came in, used Scorched Earth and then Conflag and last round of Volcano killed him. :P

Used Fel Flame in place of Searing Scorching, and Lil' Ragnaros 1 2 1 in place of lava crab. Use conflagration with lil' rag and one other attack if ruinhoof isn't dead yet.

Pandaren Water Spirit 1-2-2. Fel Flame 1-2-1. Shard of Cyrukh 1-1-2. Followed Faiden's strategy, but did not have a Searing Scorchling, so I used the Shard. Worked great.

If you swap the Dive to turn 2, this strategy works much better. I had 3 failures using the strategy with Pandaren Water Spirit doing Geyser, Water Jet, THEN Dive.
