When your pet gets swapped in, it takes your lowest health pet. Make sure your 3rd slot bird has more health than your 2nd slot pet.

Also, I subbed Shadefeather Hatchling (1,2,1) for 2nd pet since I didn't have it. Call Darkness, then Nocturnal Strike, Peck as filler. Worked great, didn't even use 1st pet to finish. (edited)
