COMPETITIONS - BY ARANESH
Update April 18th: The below changes are now in effect!
Compensation for coins invested in your vault defense as well as the arena challenge fights are not implemented yet. Both will be added asap.

Thanks everyone for participating in the quick survey!
It's pretty clear which direction the game should take. But the devil's in the details, so here's my current plan on how to make this change happen. Let me know what you think! There's still time to make adjustments.

1. Removal of PvP elements

All options to attack other players will be gone. You will also not be able to stash coins anymore because... why would you ^^
Your vault will also not have a power level anymore and no options to upgrade it. Coins invested in upgrading will be compensated back later on.

2. Warrior repurpose

Warriors will still be around and you will keep all your warriors. They will come in use for two new features:
  • Chests you find on strategies are protected by NPC warriors. you need to beat them in order to claim the chest
  • Within your vault, you will be able to take part in an arena challenge. Your choice which difficulty - higher risk, higher reward
  • Since there won't be a need for many warriors anymore, you will be able to sell warriors in exchange for coins. Sell prices TBD

3. New Leaderboard

The leaderboard on the front page will stay very similarly, showing who has the largest hoard of coins. There will also be prizes for the top 3 players who accumulate the most coins by the end of the game. That means you will still have to decide between purchasing raffle tickets or hoarding your coins to aim for one of the leaderboard spots.

Prizes for the Leaderboard are:
  • 1st place: 1 Year of WoW Gametime
  • 2nd place: BlizzConline Celebration Bundle, Epic Edition (sponsored by Blizzard EU)
  • 3rd place: $40 Battle.net Balance

(The other two prizes are added to the raffle tickets)

Almost end of this game! I must say, I enjoyed it as a in-between-work thing. Just peacefully clicking things:).
okay, the pvp element might not be peacefull for some, but a little 'hunt-element' or 'hide-element'; I liked it.
I'm sure lots of us have preferences and tips, on how to make this game a succes for the majority. Do you have a brainstorm-box Aranesh, for all those ideas? Whould love to contribute, as would others I think? But in the end, it must remain a fun game, also for you to design!
Kudo's:)

I two have enjoyed clicking around when I have 5 minutes spare. I didn't mind the PvP aspect, it made you have to think and - to me at least - would have controlled the mass of coins accumulated, but it is what it is.

I'm not likely to win a thing as I'll not have accumulated as many raffle tickets as someone who could spend time clicking away. For example, the people who realise they're not likely to be in the top three so decide to spend it all on tickets now. :D

But! It's been fun and all thanks to the developers for arranging it. *thumbs up*

Thanks both of you :)
I know it wasn't perfect. Hard to get something like this right on the first try. But overall I'm not unhappy with how everything went! Will definitely do it again, and I already have some ideas how to make the game more interesting in terms of what to do with your coins :D

I don't have a dedicated suggestion box for the game but any way of contact works for me. Email (top left), comment here, discord, direct message on here.... whatever you prefer really. I'm collecting all feedback in my own notes anyway. Happy to hear your thoughts!

And good luck for the raffle :D

I am glad the PVP element was taken away. It left a nasty taste for those of us who were more peaceful players. Looking at the leaderboard now - I don't think it's really possible to get into the top 3 without using some kind of automated functions. IMHO.

The PvP element kept that in control. Now there are no limits people can just spend their time clicking all day. So no, those of us who can't spend all day doing that, or run a search routine to find where coins are, don't stand a chance. But the majority asked for it to be removed so it is what it is. :)

Here's to hoping the arena will be more fun than endlessly going through strategies. It gets boring really fast.

Aranesh

wrote on 2021-04-26 06:25:45

Got an update on that. The arena won't make it into the game this time. I got a version of it up and working but it's not adding anything new to the game right now. I'll have to do some better design work and make it more interesting. But for this iteration of the game I won't put it live.

Sorry for the disappointment! Lots of good learnings from the game though! Next one will be better :-)

since the stratey has changed, can you adjust the 'buy raffle ticket amount'? Keep clicking my *** off to spend 5000g on tickets:):):)

That.... is a lot more complex to do ^^'

I have only found chests since the makeover. I have 3 warriors with the highest at at 118. I was happy to play just for the raffle. I was surprised this time around the healing cost shot up so high to 59 coins to heal my warrior within 24 hours or lose it. If we have to use warriors to win chests & we have limited coins as casual players, could there maybe be an option that if you don't choose to pay the 59 coins the warrior can be healed in 24 hours instead of losing it forever?

Aranesh

wrote on 2021-04-20 05:21:59

I've just removed the 24h limitation completely. Warriors will never be lost completely, unless you sell them.

'm almost regretting the pvp, now the first makes 20k coins a day, people who do nothing it's obvious that they win !!! the only time I could win something ... :(

These people racking up over 10k coins within a day amaze me. That's a lot of committed hours for prizes worth so little. Granting the potential for lots of sold warriors, it's still a lot. Is there any way to test for botting? The hour or so a day I can play are clearly not goin to win anything outside of the raffle.

Aranesh

wrote on 2021-04-19 14:40:46

It's amazing, yeah. Do you really think the prizes are little..?

I have built in botting detection, of course, and I will do manual checks for the top spots. I am not going to ban any accounts because... well they are free, there's no point, but I am disqualifying anyone I find botting from winning any of the prizes.

Deramis#1884

wrote on 2021-04-19 17:45:13

Not little in aggregate. Very generous contest. Just seems surprising that people would put in so many hours of effort for at most ~$200 worth of prize.

It's a huge bummer that you can't just simply sell the warriors back for the same number of coins you spent on them. Anyone who spent coins upgrading warriors is taking a massive loss now (leveling a warrior from 10 to 150 costs the equivalent of at least 700 coins). Even just selling back the low-level (pre-50 ones) for the same amount you'd buy them for would be an improvement. Instead, you only get 5 coins for a level 10 warrior you'd buy for 10 coins, and you only get 45% of the coins back you invested in upgrading your warrior after that. What was the reasoning behind that choice?

Aranesh

wrote on 2021-04-19 06:00:45

Happy to explain. I had a bunch of decisions to make for changing the game to pure PvE. The toughest was where to draw the line in terms of a reset for the new leaderboard. Resetting *everything* including tickets would have been too much, I think. That's just punishing everyone and especially those who invested a lot of time already. I definitely didn't want to go that route.

Resetting (= removing) all Warriors would have been a tough blow to everyone who invested in the PvP aspect and got a larger number of high level warriors in preparation for the final day(s). But keeping them around is also pointless because in this new variation you need 1 or 2, maybe 3 on max level and that's it. That again would be tough for those who did spend the time.

So the option to sell warriors came up and it felt like a good middle ground. Devil's in the detail then, because giving back the full upgrade price would give some players a pretty decent advantage in the new game (e.g. 15 warriors á 700 coins is a lot of coins). And on top, not all warrior upgrades were done with coins! In a perfect system I'd have checked exactly how many coins were spent on upgrading each *individual* warrior and give that back, but I did not have the time to build such a complex system. Middle ground again => selling the warriors, but at a reduced price.
Why also the 50 and below warriors? Because I did not want players to "store" their coins in warriors to hide them from the leaderboard (you know, buying 500 Sha's and selling them right before the end). I'm pretty sure some with their existing warriors will still do that but at least it's very limited to just them.

Hope all that made sense ^^'
Feel free to ask more if you're curious!

It's wrong to complain when Aranesh and his team have gone to such a lot of time an effort to create a little event like this but I do find the change a real shame. I understand not everyone enjoys a tactical experience but as I am reading it, the reward change appears to disadvantage anyone who was engaging in the PvP side and favours everyone who was just buying raffle tickets. A real pity to have to alter the event so drastically part way through. (edited)

Couldn't agree more, it's a shame the game didn't work out as I hoped.... but I do think it's better to change it now than to let it run and potentially have a lot of frustrated people at the end. Hope the changes now make sense and are still fun!

it's the first time we're doing this, so we didn't have a clue about how many people would participate. the testing was only between like 3 people and that's why we had to speculate alot about how things might turn out. the pvp was a lot more fun between us and we honestly did not expect this game to be so popular, that's why it's not working the way we wanted it to.

personally i miss the old version of the game too but if the majority doesn't want it then that's how it's gonna be (edited)

VanyaMia

It was nice to see and well executed, particularly for a first attempt, plus I personally thought the whole battling thing seemed in the spirit of main game too. Kudos for trying to entertain!

Mutanis

I miss the pvp too. especially stealing coins from Shenk :D But actually the poll result isn't surprising. The Wow pet community isn't much interested in pvp. So I think they come up with a good pve alternative :)

Deramis#1884

wrote on 2021-04-18 16:09:33

Can't please everyone, but this is much worse. I'm not risking attacking a 171 chest with my 150 warrior and risk losing 71 coins with no idea what the reward might be. I really enjoyed the pvp part. For me this has essentially become a raffle now.

Aranesh

wrote on 2021-04-18 16:29:56

I made sure you won’t make a loss unless you are very very unlucky with repeated attacks :)

VanyaMia

wrote on 2021-04-18 18:03:01

The chests do seem to be worth it but just look at the leader board now there isn't any risk.

Deramis#1884

wrote on 2021-04-18 19:36:29

Yep, just lost 225 coins attempting to get a 193 chest. Not going to risk the 300 loss. The 171 seemed mostly worth the risk though.

Magedin#1458

wrote on 2021-04-18 19:49:59

It's definitely a risk, but then again, so was PvP. This part seems about right to me, so I'm not complaining about the new PvE chests. No guilt but the loss of my poor little warriors!
